
One glaring example (there are many others) is that Hickey, described as a Liverpudlian and whose dialogue is read in a stong scouse accent, is later described as a "cockney Napoleon" ?! I'm not attacking or belittling American English as a literary medium but in a historical novel about English characters, the research and care could have been a little more thorough. There are also other errors that that a good editor or proofreader would have highlighted. The writing is, overall, good but I kept being slightly irritated by the anachronistic "Americanisms" that kept ceeping into the attempts to write dialogue spoken by 19th century Englishmen. It says a lot for a writers skill that he is able to write a book of this length, set the arctic, and avoid the descriptions of snow and ice (of which there are literally hundreds) becoming repetitive or cliched.
